The Basic Cake Decorating Utensils Explained In Just 5 Minutes

You may be just starting out, or you may already know a lot about the art of cake decorating, but whatever the case, you will need to use the basic cake decorating utensils. The problem is that there are many articles and websites out there that differ in their choice of the basic cake decorating utensils and this leads to confusion. As a result, I’ve written this article as a concise and easy-to-read summary of the topic.

The following is a list of the most essential utensils for cake decorating. Each one is followed by a short explanation:

- Plastic Rolling Mat – It’s helpful to have simple, flexible mats to be able to roll out icing especially when they are peeled off the fondant. It would also be helpful if the mat comes with a grippy undermat so that it remains stable on the table.

- Marble Rolling Pin – While you may be accustomed to using wooden or plastic rolling pins for other cooking recipes, it is best to use a marble rolling pin for the icing. This is because the plastic pin may not be strong enough to roll out the fondant while the wooden one will absorb grease.

- Turntable – Sometimes known as a Lazy Susan, these are very useful in decorating cakes, especially those with more than 1 level. Its importance is often underestimated.

- Icing Smoothers – Also known as icing paddles, these are important in order to press the air bubbles out of the fondant and making it smooth and shiny.

There’s no doubt that cake decorating is a fun and exciting activity and with these basic cake decorating utensils, anyone can embrace it.
